The cafeteria food really bothers me because it's so full of MSG that it doesn't actually fill me up. So I'll eat a bunch of food, an amount that would make me really full back home, but I'm still hungry afterwards. I decided to try the food stands around campus as a change of pace and THANK GOODNESS. I am in love. I have become obsessed with this one stand where they put egg, with some sweet onions, a spicy chili powder concoction, and then this sweet brown sauce (they put it on everything) in a wrap. It's 4 yuan and worth every penny. They open really early so I started getting it for breakfast before Chinese.
Every time I have to interact with the locals I get better and better at sign language. Ask my roommate- I am skilled. This morning, using hand signals, I got the food stand chef to make Kat an egg and sausage breakfast biscuit...And I can communicate surprisingly well with cab drivers just by reading their hand motions and guessing what they're asking me. It's funny, because I imagine my mom being the exact same way in a foreign country. At a certain point we had to abandon our fears of looking like ignorant tourists, because that is precisely what we are. I may look ridiculous, but I get what I need...
